Résumé : |
As teachers of English, we have observed that teaching this foreign language in the Algerian schools faces many problems, especially in technical schools. These problems have resulted because educationalists and curriculum designers have neglected a very important element in the process of learning and teaching English as a foreign language. They haven’t taken into consideration the differences that exist among learners and teachers, in terms of learning and teaching styles. These educationalists seem to conceive that all learners have the same way of learning and that all teachers possess the same manner of instructing. And on this basis they have designed text-books and teacher’s manuals.
As teachers, we are aware that our pupils learn in different ways and that each stream imposes a particular learning style or strategy. For instance the learners in technical streams learn through moving, acting, and doing. The problem is that the activities in the text-book which are designed for these streams and the corresponding teacher’s manuals don’t meet the needs of this type of learners, which may be considered tactile learners. The objective from this research study is try to find a balance between the methods of instruction and the different learning styles and strategies in Biskra high schools. This balance will certainly lead to better motivation, more comfort in learning and better results. So, what can we do to match the learning styles and strategies with the text books and the activities found in teacher’s manuals. And how can we achieve a balance between teachers’ instructional methods and learning styles and strategies in our Algerian High Schools. |
