| Résumé : | Twentieth century American literature is especially concerned about the nature of relationship between society and the presence of characters on the one hand and the insertion of a spiritual identity amid a moral decline and materialistic confines of that society on other hand. Despite the fact that religion has a privileged role in the development of the American character, many realists and naturalists deny any importance for the religious agency. Consequently, a spiritual identity crisis is crystallized and many characters are delineated as being trapped inside an appalling dilemma of either coping with social constraints or setting a purposeful journey towards a safe establishment of a mystical selfhood and then bearing the excruciating ramifications of inserting one’s identity. Thus, this study aims at uncovering the different social constraints, identifying the aspects necessary to the establishment of a spiritual identity and disclosing the influence of the social constraints on the establishment of a spiritual identity within the materialistic confines of America’s twentieth century society |
